What you'll learn in this kids acting technique class:

Sanford Meisner’s impact on the craft of acting has been, and continues to be immense. His altogether unique approach to the craft has impacted generations of actors. “The seed of acting,” said Meisner, “is rooted in the “reality of doing”. Rather than focus on emotion, Meisner focused on behavior. To accomplish his goal of removing the thought process from the actor’s work he invented the “repetition” exercises. In doing so he opened the door to the instinctive/impulsive way of behaving. “Thinking”, for the Mesiner trained actor is the enemy of instinct, ergo, with this revolutionary approach to the craft we learn to think with our gut.

As I remind my students in every class I teach, the body speaks and the brain thinks. Emotion therefore is the product of the “pinch” for the “ouch”. Through this process the student learns what it means to “Live truthfully in the imaginary circumstances.” Or as Meisner said in one of his most famous quotes, “An ounce of behavior is worth a pound of words.”

The traditional Meisner program is 2 years. The following is Alan's comprehensive program that includes all the stages of the Meisner Technique
  1. The First Thing
  2. Putting it into language
  3. Point Of View (In the chair, with cue)
  4. Point Of View (in the chair, sans cue)
  5. Point Of View (standing)
  6. The Knock At The Door - no prep
  7. The Independent Physical Activity
  8. The IPA with a reason.
  9. The 3 Knocks: the partner in the room has an activity with the simple and specific reason for doing it.
  10. The Knock At The Door: partner knocking has a simple and specific reason that brings them to the door. Partner w/activity has a simple and specific reason for doing the activity
  11. Partner knocking has simple and specific reason. Partner in the room has the activity with an emotional prep that’s a little more important
  12. Partner knocking does emotional prep that’s a little more important. Partner with activity does emotional prep that’s a little more important
  13. The partner coming to the door has an emotional prep that’s a little more important. The partner in the room has the activity with “an emotional prep in the extreme
  14. The person coming to the door has a prep in the extreme. The person with the IPA has a prep in the extreme.
  15. In Relationship: The person coming to the door has an emotional prep in the extreme which has nothing to do with the person in the room. The partner in the room has the activity with an emotional prep in the extreme
  16. In relationship: The partner coming to the door has an emotional prep in the extreme that has something to do with the person in the room. The partner with the activity has an emotional prep in the extreme.
  17. The time limit, in relationship. Everything is the same as stage 16 except this time the person with the activity has to estimate how long the activity would normally take and cut the time in half.
Alan will explain all stages of the technique in detail as students progress through the stages.
