Question from Anonymous
Is this course good for someone who wants to learn how to carve gemstones (lapidary work) ? Like Rose Quartz, Jade, Moonstone? If so would those stones be available to buy? Thanks!
Answer from Marc F. Verified Educator
Unfortunately, the stone carving class does not cover gems nor semi-precious stones. The process is similar, but we only use alabaster, soapstone, and marble. We do have a wide variety of stones available for purchase. However, the gemstone selection is limited but very pretty. - Marc.

Question from rachel e.
If the student is to buy the stone - but has no clue how to choose or what to get - is the stone chosen after the first class or is it expected to have the stone prior? If prior, how does one go about doing that? Thanks.
Answer from Samantha F. Verified Student
Hey, you purchase the stone right before the class. The teacher can help, as well as the staff. They will gear you towards a more manageable stone for your first time. The one I picked cost around 90 dollars. There are a lot of choices.
Answer from Marc F. Verified Educator
Hi Rachel, I usually recommend coming in a little early for your first class as there are a lot to choose from, but we will be here to assist you and find the right stove for your project and budget. Please let us know if you need more information or have any additional questions! Marc - The Compleat Sculptor.

Question from Anthony G.
Hi. The description says “tools, sharpening and maintenance are all covered” but then at the end it says materials and tools are not covered in the class fee.
Answer from Chermalyn P. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi, Anthony! They do have tools for you to use when students begin the class, most students buy their own within the first couple of classes. The stone, however, is not included in the class fee and can be any size and type, but they will try to guide students when choosing. Stones are sold by the pound, the average cost is usually between $40 and $125 for a beginner.
