What you'll learn in this cad class:

The 3D Design, Printing and Casting class is a 4 week course that will tech the students some amazing skills. First you will learn how to create your designs using 123D Design. 123D Design is a free, powerful, yet simple 3D creation and editing tool available for PC, Mac and iPad platforms. Once you have finished with your design then it’s off to the printer, the Pro Jet 1200 by 3D Systems. This $5000 printer delivers fast, ultra hi-res prints for your biggest dreams and smallest projects. It has pro capabilities with prints ready for metal casting and product development. Create small, precise, detail-rich prototype parts, and casting patterns for your jewelry designs, figurines, and parts. Print in the size of 1.69 x 1.06 x 5.9” and in ultra high resolution 30 micron print layers.

Now that you have your design printed in wax, its time to sprue your piece. In casting, a sprue is the passage through which a molten material is introduced into a mold, and the term also refers to the excess material which solidifies in the sprue passage.

The next step is to invest your piece, a process based on and also called lost-wax casting, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. From 5,000 years ago, when beeswax formed the pattern. the investing process is to take The entire wax assembly and to pour a silicon slurry into a flask which is then cured in a kiln. This creates your mold to be used in the casting process. This is a sacrificial mold however a duplicate can be made with ease through the 3D printing process.

Now for the casting process of your piece using precious metal. Centrifugal casting, is used as a means of casting, detailed jewelry or small scale sculpture. An articulated arm is free to spin around a vertical axle, which is driven by a spring. The entire mechanism is enclosed in a tub or drum to contain hot metal should the mold break or an excess of metal be used. Single use molds are prepared using the lost wax method. A small amount of metal in a crucible (a sort of ceramic pan) next to the mold is heated with a torch. When the metal is molten the arm is released, forcing (by centrifugal force) the metal into the mold. The high forces imposed on the metal overcome the viscosity, resulting in a finely detailed workpiece.

The final step of the process is finishing and polishing your piece. The polishing and finishing process begins with rough precious metal forms created during jewelery casting. A jewelers saw is used to remove the piece from the sprue. A wide array of machines and hand held tools to remove uneven or rustic surfaces from the metal. Wheels and bits used with a rotary machine are used to shape and contour surfaces.

The next stages include lighter polishing mediums that reveal a brilliant shine. Once the desired polish is achieved, various textures and finishes can be applied to specified surfaces of jewelry to add character or enhance the design.
