Jiffar Abakoyas

Jiffar has experience working with data in a variety of settings both in private industry as well as government. Among others, he has worked on data science projects at IBM, where last summer he worked on developing Natural Language Processing tools for their Global Chief Data Office in HQ. He has also worked at the Federal level for the Department of Energy helping manage quarterly data collected to regulate wholesale power markets; and at State level for NY MTA as a data engineering intern improving subway data collection and storage; and currently for the NYC Office of the Mayor as a fellow tasked with improving data collection and analytic processes used to track climate and energy  data within the city. He also serves as a tutor at CUNY City College of New York, where he helps students taking Computer science, Mathematics, Statistics and Economics courses, and where he is completing his MS in Data Science & Engineering. He is originally from Ethiopia and lives in Harlem with his new wife. In his free time he likes to read non-fiction (health, history and philosophy), visit art galleries, go out to restaurants, and spend time in nature.
